With hind legs pink with scabious pollen the Large scabious mining bee is a rare beast. Front legs tipped with orange, dark tinted wings with short white hairs gracing her face. Collecting pollen from only scabious she relies on the geology to be right for her appearance in the countryside. Males are slightly smaller and more orange but only slightly less impressive. Despite sharing the Scabious with a wide range of other pollinators, the Large Scabious Mining bee does not seem to be keen on sharing her flower. Everything from small Swollen Thighed beetles to Burnet moths steer well clear of this sizeable bee.
